At My Eco Escape, we're all about finding incredible stays that don't just offer a getaway but also give back to the planet. We are on a mission to build a community of responsible people who can travel without worrying about their carbon footprint. And this is unimaginable without our Eco-hosts, our Heroes, who take several eco measures to build eco-friendly retreats. And behind every eco-friendly retreat, there's a passionate host with a story to tell!
In this special feature, we caught up with Verity and Mark from The Green House Cabin, a place that proves that sustainability and comfort can go hand in hand. We talked about what inspired them to go green, their challenges, and the little (and big) things they do to make their stays as eco-friendly as possible.
So, if you've ever wondered what goes into creating a sustainable escape or love reading inspiring stories for passion for the planet, keep reading.
Introducing the owners; tell us about yourself and your journey and passion towards sustainability.
I'm Verity; alongside my husband, Mark, I own and manage The Green House cabin, a self-catering retreat nestled in Ettrickbridge in the heart of the Scottish Borders. We created the original Green House back in 2012 as a purpose-built self-catering cottage. As its name suggests it was designed to be as sustainable as possible.
Then, in January 2022, an accidental fire happened. It was a heartbreaking loss, but from that devastation came an opportunity - to rebuild, reimagine, and enrich our vision for sustainable living. We incorporated the latest green technology and design to create an even more energy-efficient, environmentally conscious escape, making our cabin more green than before.

What inspired you to make your accommodation eco-friendly?
Several things inspired me to make The Green House cabin eco-friendly. Living in a rural area creates a profound sense of connection with nature and fosters a greater understanding of environmental issues and a desire to live more sustainably. I wanted to create a truly authentic and immersive experience for my guests, one that harmonises with the surrounding environment. Incorporating eco-friendly practices not only benefits the planet, but also enhances the comfort and enjoyment of guests. Things like natural materials, energy efficiency, and a connection to the local ecosystem create a truly special and memorable experience.

What sustainable features or practices make your accommodation unique?
The latest green technology has been incorporated into the build, including triple-glazed windows, solar panels, an energy storage battery and an EV charger. Fixtures and fittings have been sourced for their eco credentials, and guest toiletries are responsibly produced and refillable as required.
Recycling is made as easy as possible, with composting onsite and dedicated recycling bins. There is a water butt to harvest rainwater used to water the planters of flowers dotted about the site to reduce water usage. All cleaning products are eco-friendly, and I even make some myself from natural ingredients.

What eco-friendly materials have you used in your accommodation's design and construction?
Our commitment to sustainability is reflected in every aspect of The Green House Cabin's design and construction. We have incorporated eco-friendly materials such as triple-glazed windows, which provide excellent insulation and energy efficiency, helping to reduce heat loss and maintain a comfortable indoor temperature year-round. Every element of the cabin has been thoughtfully chosen to minimise environmental impact while creating a warm and inviting space for our guests to enjoy.

How do you ensure the stay remains energy-efficient (e.g., insulation, energy-saving appliances, motion-sensor lighting)?
The cabin is powered by solar PV panels, with battery storage. Motion-sensor lighting and energy-efficient LED bulbs help conserve electricity, ensuring that energy is only used when needed. Every detail, from insulation to appliance choices, has been carefully considered to create a comfortable yet eco-friendly retreat.

What is one thing guests love the most about your eco-stay?
Peace & quiet. The covered decking area creates a comfortable and sheltered spot to relax in the outdoors, whatever the weather, and is super-popular with guests cosying up under blankets and hot water bottles to bird watch, star gaze and even watch the Northern Lights if they're lucky!
The semi-wild garden is full of natural habitats for wildlife, and the bird feeders support a diverse wild bird population and provide entertainment for guests. Our onsite beehives produce amazing honey for guests to sample, as well as free-range eggs from our small flock of hens.

How do you encourage guests to be more eco-conscious during their stay? (E.g., recycling bins, water-saving tips, reusable bottle stations)
We provide easy recycling and composting facilities, along with eco-friendly toiletries. We also provide information on local services and attractions and to support the local community and enhance the guest experience, we offer local recommendations. I use a digital guidebook to eradicate paper, and it also ensures that information remains relevant and up to date.
Guests are encouraged to enjoy the rural setting by walking, biking, and hiking routes from the doorstep. OS maps, binoculars, star charts, and local area guides are provided, which cater to all interests and abilities to get out and enjoy nature, whatever the weather.

Do you support local farmers and businesses? How do you incorporate locally sourced products?
Through our digital guest handbook, we provide recommendations on locally sourced products, farm shops, and independent businesses in the area. By highlighting these wonderful local offerings, we aim to promote sustainable tourism while giving our guests an authentic taste of the Scottish Borders.
What advice would you give to other accommodation owners looking to make their stays more eco-friendly?
Make it as easy as possible for your guests to be eco-friendly without too much effort - they are on holiday, after all. For example -
-Make recycling straightforward with clearly labelled bins.
-Provide a compost bin for food waste.
-Provide eco-friendly cleaning products, and if you have the time, you can make your own, which also saves money! (Plenty of recipes on the internet.)
-Eco-friendly loo roll and toiletries are easy to source and don't compromise on luxury. Source local produce for welcome packs; adding some home baking or freshly picked flowers gives a special touch.
It is important to communicate these green practices to your guests not only to educate them but to make them feel good about their stay and encourage them to adopt more eco-friendly practices into their daily lives back home. Detail your green practices in the guest handbook, where you can also highlight local businesses and attractions.
Finally, join Green Tourism - This is a great way to audit the green credentials of your business, gain eco certification, help the environment and maybe even save money.

What's one message you'd love to share with eco-conscious travellers?
I want guests to realise that being green and sustainable does not mean compromising on comfort and style. I have created an eco-friendly experience for guests so that they can relax and enjoy their stay whilst secure in the knowledge that they are making a positive impact on the environment at the same time.
